Solution: Can’t Uninstall IE 10 on Windows 7 – not listed in view installed updates

I had a client that installed Internet Explorer 10 and then did a system restore to resolve some other issue.  This created a
BIG problem.  Internet Explorer 10 opens then immediately closes (flashes).  It get’s worse though.  Internet explorer 10 cannot be uninstalled from programs and features or and it’s not listed in view installed updates…it’s just not there.  If you try to reinstall IE 10 it says a newer version is already installed.  YIKES!!!

Here’s what worked for me.

  1. Click Start (Windows Globe)
  2. Click All Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Right Click Command Prompt and click Run As Administrator
  5. Type sfc /scannow and press enter

This process can take up to and hour (or more) to complete and may ask for your Windows 7 media.  At the end of the sfc /scannow it may reboot your PC.  Once your PC reboots you’ll have Internet Explorer 9 (or 8/7) installed.  Now if you need or want to load Internet Explorer 10 again you can reinstall it by downloading it again.

I have no idea if this will work for everyone, but this worked for me after dozens of attempts at various fixes.

    • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example

Can’t open the log file, access denied. Any ideas?

      • Hi, problem solved I suppose… but 4 future reference:

Click Start, type notepad, right-click Notepad.exe and choose “Run as Administrator”. In notepad, click File>Open and browse to the file in question.

    • I was able to resolve the issue by simply performing a roll back to before running Windows update. I then decided to “hide” the IE10 update so that my client does not run into that problem again!

      Thanks – JG

  1. Hi, I have the same problem. I cannot find IE 10 in installed updates and I have some programs that are not working. I have tried the sfc /scannow although it didn’t take anywhere near 1 hour to complete but nothing was found and nothing was changed. I cannot find my Windows 7 disc, I have tried booting from my Repair disc but I just don’t seem to get anywhere. Any other suggestions, I really don’t want to format my hard drive.

  2. I had the same issue as well, IE 10 not listed under installed updates. I was able to uninstall it running the following command (running command prompt as administrator):

    FORFILES /P %WINDIR%servicingPackages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*10.*.mum /c “cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart”

  3. I tried the script that Steelev3.2 posted and it worked in my situation. During the script run I received a few “Access Denied…” errors, but I think those applied to the IE 10 versions that were not installed. I OK’d through those Access Denied errors and restarted the PC and had IE 9 back and working. I promptly installed and ran the IE 10 Blocker kit. My company supports a web app that is not compatible with IE 10 yet, so the help that Steelev3.2’s script gave me is immense. Kudos and thanks!!!
